The Best Wrestling Media

If you’re reading this, you probably like wrestling. You probably like content. Me too. Sadly though, wrestling content isn’t particularly dense or high quality.

I’ve been in this space for a while. I watched Flowrestling get it’s traction. I’ve watched many creators lose their following too.

I am by no means an authority but over the years I’ve found creators I really like. I would like to share them with you. Note: some specifically about wrestling, some are wrestling adjacent.

Here is what I’m into currently.

Instagram

One of the main areas I consume wrestling media is here. I don’t love social media but it’s the best we have these days. Here are my favorite accounts.

@wrestlertraining - Training

This is a sneaky gem. It’s a collection of wrestlers training across the world. Some of this stuff is silly and useless but some is fantastic and I’ve been using it for years. It is also a peek into how other cultures train.

@speedofsport - Training

This isn’t a wrestling specific account but their content really feels applicable to wrestling. It features very plyometric focused strength work which I believe is the key to improving wrestling in the weight room.

@wrestlechicago - Art

I love this account. I love Ross. Wrestling needs more authentic art and Ross is so creative and awesome. I have his monthly art subscription and get extremely excited when I see his envelope of stickers, postcards or whatever in the mail. I will be a customer of his forever.

@kadircaliskan - Photography

IMO he is the best in the game. It’s one thing to have a nice camera and be at a good wrestling tournament. With that combination you’re guaranteed to get some decent wrestling photos. Kadir has a palpable style to his photography. Lots of negative space and always looking for his target being square on with the camera.

@toughsoleswaps - Shoes

I used to be more of a wrestling shoe head than I am these days. With that said, thi dude is unreal. He is so creative and the quality looks incredible though I’ve never owned any myself. He is also just prolific. He releases new original designs so regularly. It’s not just colors and different logos either, he’s fantastic at playing with fabric and texture.

@matsensewrestling - Technique

I’m not particularly impressed with most technique on Instagram. Honestly, most is garbage and the production value is just horrendous. Mat Sense does a good job in picking technique, leaving it open, and explaining it very concisely.

Youtube

I’m a huge Youtube viewer. I watch 80% of media there. Sadly, there aren’t great wrestling Youtube creators which is why I’m considering entering the space.

Michael Choi - Highlights

Choi never posts anymore but he should. He’s the only highlight maker that’s any good. Wrestling is good at making hype videos but bad at highlights. I want to see how J’den Cox wrestles and nothing is better than watching his set up and finish a takedown over and over and over again. I’ve use Michael’s videos often to learn and teach people about specific athletes. I wish he made more.

Garage Strength - Training

I’m always looking for ways to improve our teams training. Garage Strength used to train Nick Gwizdowski which is how I originally found him. He has a great mix of traditional and creative, sport specific training plus he adds science and peer review research to add legitimacy to his ideas.

Overtime Athletes - Training

Overtime athletes is basically Garage Strength but not wrestling or combat sport specific. I usually use their page to find ballistic training progressions as inspiration for what we do at Lakeland Wrestling.

Functional Patterns - Training

very tentatively put FP on this list as they’ve been losing me more and more as they continue to post. Naudi and the gang have some novel, real points drawing counter to traditional training. You can see what they do all over modern training even if it isn’t FP. For instance, see their exercises all over Jordan Burroughs’ training these days. With that said, they are a cult. And their beliefs are basically just shock value to try to draw counter to modern training. They make wide and massive generalizations without any scientific evidence. They don’t even want to bring peer reviewed science into the picture. With that said, they are onto something with respecting unilaterl motion and biomechanics more instead of just pumping iron.

Twitter

Literally no one. There is not one creator on Twitter I can’t live without. This platform has become somewhere to bicker and the creators here just post things to shock and create controversy. I think all of wrestling twitter could shut down and the world would be better for it.

Flowrestling

Flowrestling is so disappointing these days. Yes, I let work pay for it but only for the matches they stream. Their articles are poor, their pundits are mediocre, and have a very weird sense of self accomplishment. The content is so bro-y it’s painful. Plus their website design is terrible to navigate. They used to have an incredible technique library but they have since butchered it. RIP.

Rokfin

I’ve never used Rokfin. It’s hard for me to rationalize paying for content I’ve never seen. Scott Green is fantastic and he may be the one person that gets me to convert. Anyone have any other suggestions?

The reality is that the wrestling content world is weak.

We are way to saturated with bickering about results, reactions, predictions, rankings, and recruiting.

We need more

Lifestyle content

Wrestling is such a way of life with so many awesome/weird culture things. We’re missing this huge market. Youtube is filled with other athletics’ cultures. Basketball has these great pro athlete podcasts, BJJ has great behind the scenes stuff. We’re just missing it.

Technique

Wrestling technique pages are just so weak. So bad I need to fix it myself. Stay tuned.

Scouting

Wrestling is a sport that has not figured out scouting. I watch things like Kobe Bryant’s Details and I see such an opening for wrestling. Gotta make moves.

Art

Guys like Ross at wrestlechicago have shown us that wrestlers have an appetite for authentic art. Need more creators in this space. Wrestling shames artisticness so much outside of lame graphic design. Need more people to branch out.
